The result of the Rhode Island Republican Senate primary between Senator Lincoln Chafee and Cranston Mayor Stephen Laffey may spell the outcome of the general congressional elections this coming November. There is a major conflict between those in RI who favor Laffey, while much of the national GOP supports the incumbent Chaffey.
While I consider myself a conservative before a Republican, one needs to closely examine the facts here. It is clearly evident that Lincoln Chaffey does not consider President Bush as one of his friends. However, he has held the RI seat for over 30 years and has an excellent chance of retaining it in the ultra-liberal state. Having this happen is crucial to maintaning the GOP majority in the senate. Before you decry Chafee, ask yourself, "Does someone else really have a chance?"
